Thursday, September 5 | 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Grinter 376
This book club will be in Spanish, featuring six author guests who will Zoom with the attendees to have an informal chat about their works and ideas. Attendees can practice Spanish, engage with thought-provoking and entertaining modern Latin American literature, and have the chance to talk to the authors behind the works!
5 Sep | Federico Vite (Mexico), Zeitgeist tropical tackles the question if there’s such a thing as a “tropical mindset” of violence and exuberance, in an unforgettable short story collection to go beyond the clichés of drug-trafficking culture.
Other Club de Lectura sessions:
- 19 Sep | María Ospina (Colombia), Azares del cuerpo is the book that catapulted Ospina to the international stage. Each short story is meticulously crafted to make the reader re-think the whole world. Ideal for those interested in environmentalism, politics, and gender.
- 3 Oct | Giovanna Rivero (Bolivia), Tierra fresca de su tumba, a UF alum and internationally recognized writer of the new boom called the “Andean Gothic.” Great for fantasy and horror literature lovers.
- 24 Oct | Munir Hachemi (Spain), Cosas vivas, a young, humorous and realist novel by a Spanish born author of Algerian descent who is also an expert on Borges. A must for everyone interested in making transcontinental cultural connections.
- 31 Oct | Miguel Yarull (Dominican Republic), Guapo, a superb novel about what is like to be rich and have legal immunity in Latin America, about privilege and psychological trauma. Ideal for political and social sciences fans.
- 14 Nov | Nadia López (Ñuu Savi, Mexico), Tierra mojada, a strong poetry collection on identity and womanhood from one of the most awarded First Nations authors. Great for everyone interested in gender, linguistic and cultural heterogeneity.
