Club de lectura returns in Fall 2024

July 17, 2024

Last semester's popular "Meet the Author" club de lectura is returning for Fall 2024!

The fall edition will feature another six contemporary works from Latin America, and give students the opportunity to read the works and chat with the authors via Zoom:

  • 5 Sep | Federico Vite (Mexico), Zeitgeist tropical tackles the question if there’s such a thing as a “tropical mindset” of violence and exuberance, in an unforgettable short story collection to go beyond the clichés of drug-trafficking culture.
  • 19 Sep | María Ospina (Colombia), Azares del cuerpo is the book that catapulted Ospina to the international stage. Each short story is meticulously crafted to make the reader re-think the whole world. Ideal for those interested in environmentalism, politics, and gender.
  • 3 Oct | Giovanna Rivero (Bolivia), Tierra fresca de su tumba, a UF alum and internationally recognized writer of the new boom called the “Andean Gothic.” Great for fantasy and horror literature lovers.
  • 24 Oct | Munir Hachemi (Spain), Cosas vivas, a young, humorous and realist novel by a Spanish born author of Algerian descent who is also an expert on Borges. A must for everyone interested in making transcontinental cultural connections.
  • 31 Oct | Miguel Yarull (Dominican Republic), Guapo, a superb novel about what is like to be rich and have legal immunity in Latin America, about privilege and psychological trauma. Ideal for political and social sciences fans.
  • 14 Nov | Nadia López (Ñuu Savi, Mexico), Tierra mojada, a strong poetry collection on identity and womanhood from one of the most awarded First Nations authors. Great for everyone interested in gender, linguistic and cultural heterogeneity.

Last semester, the club attracted over 100 participants across the six sessions. Club organizer Luis Felipe Lomelí highlights different genres - like crime fiction and poetry - as well as countries and regions within Latin America. The club is conducted in Spanish, as most of the works are in Spanish.
