This course will address how sports and stadiums are frequently intertwined political forces in Latin America. The literature is interdisciplinary in nature, considering the political, economic, geographic, anthropologic, and linguistic ramifications and concerns. For this reason, class lectures, the readings and research, and our discussions will also mirror the complex and varied composition of this social experience. The topics will include issues such as the public funding of private stadiums, bidding for Olympic Games, and gentrification in the name of sports. It will also examine how nationalism, identity, and gender are significant to sports. And finally what makes the expression of sports in Latin America unique.
