This discussion forum centers on the experiences of Indigenous and Afro-descendent women leaders from Buenaventura Colombia, Sarayaku Ecuador, and across Paraguay who have (and continue to) lead community-based social movements for social and environmental justice. The event consists of a series of presentations that cover topics from mobilizing civil society resistance to deepen direct democracy and Afro-descendant rights in Colombia, utilizing the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to defend Indigenous territorial claims and rights, and proposals for the rights of nature that lead to re-imagining development and what it means to live well.

Following the presentations, we will have time for an open discussion among all in attendance. We hope you will join in this event to learn about these influential struggles that not only are re-shaping the national contexts where they are rooted, but have international importance with regard to human rights, climate change, and development practice.

This event has been made possible with generous support from the UF Center for Latin American Studies, U.S. Department of Education Title VI Funding, UF Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Research, UF International Center, the UF Tropical Conservation and Development Program, and the University of Arizona Center for Latin American Studies.
