Cartridge Belts and Machine Guns: Firearms, Politics, and Modernity in Mexico
Lecture by Dr. Sophie Esch
April 5 | 3:00 - 4:30 PM
Dauer 215

Lecture by Dr. Sophie Esch. From women with bandoliers crossed over their chests to Villistas riding on trains with a mounted machine gun, firearms have played a crucial role in the political and cultural imaginary of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920/40). Drawing on examples from photography, music, and literature, this talk highlights the functional and symbolic layers through which firearms have shaped conceptions of modernity and politics in modern Mexico.
